How the calculation works
A grade point average is a weighted mean, not a plain average. Every course contributes in proportion to its credit hours, so a four-credit subject moves your average four times as much as a one-credit one.
GPA = Σ(credit hours × grade point) ÷ Σ(credit hours)
Cumulative GPA works the same way one level up: each semester's GPA is weighted by the credits you carried that semester, then divided by your total credits. Averaging semester GPAs directly only gives the right answer when every semester had an identical credit load.
Common questions
What's the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA covers one term. CGPA covers everything you have completed so far. A weak semester dents your CGPA less and less as your total credit count grows.
Why does my university's scale differ from my friend's?
Grade point values and the marks that earn them are set institution by institution. Two students with the same 78% can land on different grade points. Always select the scale your own transcript uses.
How accurate is percentage conversion?
It is an estimate. Boards publish a single multiplier for convenience — 25 on a 4.0 scale, 9.5 or 10 on a 10-point scale — but the real mapping between marks and grade points is banded, not linear.
